Veteran ABC journalist and author Matt Peacock passes away after battle with cancer

Former ABC journalist and author Matt Peacock has passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer, the ABC confirmed earlier today. Peacock, known for his fearless journalism, served as a foreign correspondent in London, New York, and Washington, as well as the ABC’s chief political correspondent for programs like AM and The World Today. His acclaimed book Killer Company, which exposed asbestos-related cover-ups by James Hardie Industries, was later adapted into the ABC miniseries Devil’s Dust. Beginning his ABC career in 1973 as a cadet, Peacock dedicated decades to investigative reporting, advocating for marginalized communities. In 2013, he was elected by his peers as the staff representative on the ABC board. ABC Chair Kim Williams in a condolence note said, “Matt was a courageous and principled journalist, deeply trusted by audiences. He believed in the ABC’s integrity and urged his colleagues to uphold it without compromise. We will miss his friendship and wisdom.

The ABC has announced new roles for prominent journalists Patricia Karvelas and Greg Jennett in 2025 according to a media release from the organisation.
