NewsCorp Australia mobilises political journo crew

NewsCorp Australia logoNewsCorp Australia has marshalled its political reporting team for in-depth coverage of the upcoming federal elections.

The consortium stated that each politics reporter handling the newspaper mastheads from metro to community level, News.com.au, Storyful, and SKY News, are committed to the endeavour.

These include The Daily Telegraph’s Anna Caldwell and Sheradyn Holderhead, Melbourne Herald Sun’s James Campbell, The Courier-Mail’s Renee Viellaris and The Adelaide Advertiser’s Jade Gailberger and Matt Smith.

Health correspondent Sue Dunlevy, political reporter Claire Bickers, senior writer Paul Toohey, cost of living editor John Rolfe and personal finance experts Sophie Elsworth and Anthony Keane are also tagging in with discussions on the elections’ effect on their fields. SKY News hosts Peta Credlin, David Speers, and Paul Murray will even write op-eds for metro and regional papers.

A multichannel campaign called Truth Builds Trust is also being angled to further bring to the voting public the most important issues they want their candidates to address if elected into office. The tempo will build up gradually until voting day on 18 May 2019.

Mushroom Music Publishing reorganises operations

The Mushroom Group’s publishing arm, Mushroom Music Publishing, has completed a staff restructure.

The new hierarchy has Linda Bosidis on top as managing director, while her predecessor, Ian James, moves into a senior consultant spot.

Current international publishing manager Zoe Cloverdale moves up to senior director for international, and will also handle some business development work at Mushroom Group’s new neighbouring rights company, Good Neighbour. Music publishing assistant Tahlia Ryan is assigned as her new international assistant.  

Jules Bain, formerly Mushroom Sync’s creative manager, is moved up to head of sync, giving him oversight for Mushroom Music Publishing and the Mushroom Group’s other labels.

Roy and HG tune in at Macquarie Sports Radio

Prominent comedians “Rampaging” Roy Slaven and HG Nelson are going into action with Macquarie Sports Radio.

The network announced this week that the duo’s show, Just Short of a Length with Roy and HG, will go live every Saturday from 10AM to 12PM on 1 June 2019, covering the ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales.

The tournament will run from 30 May to 14 July with Australia set on defending their title.

“It’s been a dream to cover every ball of an ODI World Cup and Macquarie Sports Radio have gone above and beyond in making this happen. Just Short of a Length with Roy and H.G. will cover every snick and flick of the most exciting sports event in 2019 – a year chockablock full of greatness. We are simply over the moon and promise to play every ball on its merit,” the duo said.

Ironman Group buys Fairfax sports event portfolio

The Nine Network has sold the former Fairfax Media’s sports event business to the Ironman Group for $31m.

Under the deal, Ironman’s Oceania division will handle organisation of the Westpac/The Sun-Herald City2Surf, The Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon, Carman’s Women’s Fun Run, Melbourne Corporate Triathlon, and the Spring Cycle. Nine’s publications will still retain naming rights to the events.

Approximately half the employees from what used to be Fairfax Events and Entertainment – the sports event business’ parent arm – will join Ironman.

Some parenting shows and the sports event business’ smaller-scale events are to be discontinued as well.

Nine’s publishing department will acquire Fairfax’s business and food assets such as the Night Noodle Markets, Good Food Month, The Australian Financial Review Business Summit, and the Women of Influence Awards.

Eales rises to INMA presidency

The International News Media Association (INMA) has elected NewsCorp Australia COO for publishing Damian Eales as its new president.

The election was held at the INMA World Congress of News Media in New York City.

Eales’ ascendancy followed two years as vice-president; he has been on the board since 2014. He will succeed Eduardo Garces, GM of Colombia’s El Espectador newspaper.

Nine Network MD for publishing Chris Janz was also elected onto the new panel. Both him and Eales also sit on the NewsMediaWorks board.

“It is a real honour to be elected to this role at an inflexion point in the prospects for news media all around the world,” Eales said of his new position.

“The best news media businesses have weathered the storm of digital disruption and are now exploiting digital capabilities to power growth, engagement and grow new capabilities.”

5MU set for FM switch

SA radio station 1125 5MU has been approved for transition into the FM band.

ACMA chairperson Nerida O’Loughlin said the panel will consider a conversion after addressing all important issues, such as audience reception and coverage area. The plan is to convert 5MU from 1125khz to 96.3FM.

5MU covers a swathe of SA including Murray Bridge, Mount Barker and Victor Harbour. O’Loughlin said they could be covered by a new long-term community radio station, under an existing conversion plan. The ACMA has sought public feedback on the plan until 14 June 2019.

Fuller off to ABC Illawarra

ABC radio presenter Kelly Fuller is set for work at ABC Illawarra.

She stated in a tweet that she was ready to step down from ABC New England Northwest and make the move, discussing with station content director Jen Ingall about how things will go after her.

Fuller has been with ABC New England Northwest since 2008, after spending six years on the ABC’s political reporter beat.

Star Observer on the selling block

Prominent LGBTI publication The Star Observer has been put up for sale.

Publication chairman Sebastian Rice said the company was forced to go into administration due to delays in the intake of advertising fees. MaC Insolvency’s Trent McMillen has been appointed as administrator.

The Star Observer has been one of the LGBTI community’s leading content channels since 1979.
