WIN-Tasmania scraps Hobart news bulletins

WIN NEWS Tasmania bulletin team (photo credit: ABC)The WIN Network is stopping the broadcast of weeknight news bulletins in Tasmania from out of the Hobart studios.

The last local edition will air tomorrow, with the bulletins to continue from WIN’s central studio in Wollongong, NSW on August 13, 2018. TEN Eyewitness News First at 5 will replace the weekend news slot on August 18.

WIN’s Tasmania news team will concentrate on producing the content to be aired at Wollongong. No details are available on assignments for hosts Lucy Breaden (pictured, centre) and Brent Costelloe (pictured, right) going forward.

“Whilst the presentation location of our weeknightly WIN News is changing, WIN’s newsrooms in Tasmania will continue to provide the stories of interest to Tasmanian viewers as well as WIN News updates as normal throughout the day on weekdays,” said WIN Network CEO Andrew Lancaster.

Although Lancaster insists that the move will not result in job losses for the current staff, Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance – Tasmania president Mark Thomas was not as assured.

"Sadly, it's the end of a great television era in Tasmania in terms of WIN Television and formerly Tas TV which produced 60 years of television. They were the first television network to go live to air in Tasmania… People who go out every day and do three or four stories a day and do them with passion and do them to the best of their ability to bring local news to Tasmanians all around the state, some of those young people are going to lose their jobs this week and that's very sad," he said.

Wong-See joins ABC Sunshine Coast

Tim Wong-See is coming to the ABC’s Sunshine Coast studios.

The veteran radio presenter Tweeted that he is slated to join the station as a morning show producer.

Wong-See joined the ABC in March 2018 as reporter and producer with ABC’s Gold Coast bureau.

He had previously been with NOVA 106.9 until his contract lapsed at the end of last year in the wake of restructuring moves, as reported by Radioinfo, then became senior producer at SBS for most of the summer of 2017/2018.

Buchan tackles WIN sports beat

WIN News Central Queensland in Rockhampton welcomed Erin Buchan as its new sports journalist in early August.

Buchan signed up with the network a few weeks after graduating from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Journalism degree, Sports Studies major.

Tuohy leaves Herald Sun

Wendy Tuohy has stepped down from the Herald Sun.

She announced her exit in a Tweet where she thanked the staff for a long run as contributing blogger and feature writer, focusing on women's issues and family matters, among others.

Tuohy was with the Herald Sun for over ten years. She previously served with The Age as editor and deputy chief of staff and with ABC 774 Southbank as morning presenter.

ACCC starts Nine-Fairfax merger review

The ACCC has begun a review of the proposed merger behind Fairfax Media and the Nine Network.

In a market enquiries letter, ACCC GM for merger investigations Tom Leuner said the commission was concerned about the competitive impact of the merger.

A list of 27 questions was also laid down for both companies and other interested parties, which include questions about how both entities’ media platforms operated and the nature of their conduct with advertisers.

The ACCC set September 7, 2018 as the deadline for feedback, with a ruling to be possibly announced on November 8.

Luxury watch magazine Chrono arrives Down Under

Having operated for the past decade solely in the United Kingdom, deluxe watch publication, Chrono has arrived in Australia with its first edition hitting shelves this month.
The title has arrived in Australia courtesy of the Motoring Media Network, publishers of EVO Australia, with EVO subscribers receiving a copy of Chrono Australia’s inaugural issue.
The magazine covers everything related to timepieces from reviewing the latest watches to providing a history of the watches worn by James Bond.
Former editor of Bauer Media publication Men’s Style, Michael Pickering, has been handed the reins of Chrono Australia and said he’ll be trying to ensure all areas of the industry are covered whilst maintaining a focus on the high-end segment of the market.
“We try to cover all bases as any self-respecting watch magazine would. So it's high-end mechanical pieces but also smartwatches and electronic watches,” Pickering said.

News Corp journos prevail at NRMA Awards

This year’s NRMA Kennedy Awards for Excellence in Journalism became a glory run for journalists from News Corp Australia, earning 14 of the 35 honours on the rolls.

At the top of the list, The Daily Telegraph national political editor Sharri Markson made history for News Corp when she became the conglomerate’s first Kennedy Prize for Journalist of the Year recipient, based on her coverage of big stories such as the Barnaby Joyce scandal and the NSW Rural Fire Service’s conduct during the Tathra blazes this year. She later received the Outstanding Political Journalism award and was a joint recipient with Kylar Loussikian for the Rebecca Wilson Scoop of the Year award.

Anderson lands 9Honey editorship

Shauna Anderson (pictured) is coming back to the Nine Network – as the new editor of 9Honey.

She recently wrapped up affairs as news editor at Kidspot to take up the new job in October 2018. Anderson’s previous sojourn with Nine was as chief of staff at morning show Today.

“I’m so excited to be joining 9Honey – a site that in less than two years has established itself as a real leader in the online lifestyle space. This is a great opportunity to continue growing the audience and developing the proposition for an audience of women interested in our lifestyle content,” said Anderson of her new opportunity.
