Industry expert warns: Solar theft risk rising as installations surge across Australia

Announcement posted by Invigorate PR 16 Apr 2026

Australians are being warned to think beyond energy savings and consider security, with solar expert Steven Yu revealing that home solar panels and batteries can be vulnerable to theft, damage and tampering if not properly protected.

As rooftop solar and battery installations surge across the country, Yu, founder and CEO of Aussie Solar Batteries, Australia's leading solar installation brand, said many homeowners are overlooking a critical risk.

"People invest thousands, sometimes tens of thousands of dollars into solar and battery systems, but very few think about how exposed they can be," Yu said.

"In some cases, it is not just theft. It is damage, tampering or interference that can leave a home without power or facing costly repairs."

Can solar panels actually be stolen?

While rooftop solar panels are generally difficult to remove quickly, Yu said they are not immune.

"Panels are mounted externally and, in some cases, can be unbolted and removed by someone who knows what they're doing," he said.

"More commonly, we see damage, attempted removal or theft from new builds, vacant properties or homes under renovation."

Batteries, however, can present a greater risk.

"Home batteries are often installed on external walls, garages or easily accessible areas," Yu said.

"If they are not properly secured, they can become a target."

The bigger risk: tampering and system interference

Yu said theft is only part of the issue. Tampering with solar systems can create serious safety and financial risks.

"These systems are connected to your home's electrical infrastructure," he said.

"If someone interferes with wiring, inverters or battery systems, it can lead to system failure, safety hazards or complete loss of power."

He said in some cases, poorly secured systems can also be accessed digitally if not set up correctly.

"Smart solar systems are connected to apps and monitoring platforms. If these are not secured with proper passwords and protections, they can be vulnerable," he said.

The insurance gap many homeowners miss

Yu said one of the biggest and most overlooked risks is failing to update home insurance after installing solar.

"Many homeowners assume their existing policy automatically covers solar panels and batteries, but that is not always the case," he said.

"If you have not informed your insurer or updated your coverage, you could be left out of pocket if something goes wrong."

He said this is particularly important given the value of modern systems.

"These are high-value assets. If they are stolen, damaged or impacted by weather or electrical faults, the replacement cost can be significant," Yu said.

"Insurance should be part of the conversation from day one, not an afterthought."

Simple ways to protect your solar investment

Yu said there are several practical steps homeowners can take to reduce the risk.

Install secure mounting systems

"Panels should be installed with tamper-resistant fittings that make removal extremely difficult without specialised tools," he said

Position batteries in secure locations

"Where possible, install batteries in locked garages, enclosed areas or behind secure fencing rather than fully exposed external walls," he said

Use surveillance and lighting

"Security cameras and motion-sensor lighting act as strong deterrents, particularly for visible external systems," he said

Lock down access points

"Inverters, switchboards and battery units should not be easily accessible. Lockable enclosures can make a big difference," he said

Secure your digital systems

"Ensure your monitoring apps and systems are protected with strong passwords and updated regularly," he said

Update your home insurance

"Speak to your insurer and make sure your solar panels and battery system are explicitly covered. Do not assume," he said

Choose accredited installers

"A properly installed system is not just about performance, it is about safety and security," he said

A growing issue as solar adoption rises

Australia has one of the highest rates of rooftop solar adoption in the world, with millions of homes now generating their own electricity.

Yu said as installations increase, so does the need for awareness around protecting these assets.

"We are seeing more homes with high-value energy systems, and that naturally creates interest," he said.

"Even if theft is not widespread, the risk is real enough that homeowners should take simple precautions."

Protecting your energy independence

Yu said solar and battery systems are one of the most powerful investments households can make, but like any valuable asset, they need to be protected.

"Solar is about independence and control over your energy," he said.

"However, that also means taking responsibility for protecting the system that delivers it.

"With the right setup, including proper security and insurance, the risk can be significantly reduced. It is about being proactive, not reactive."
