Workspace launches national furniture take-back program as pressure grows to reduce fit-out waste

Adelaide, South Australia - Office refurbishments and commercial fit-outs generate thousands of tonnes of unwanted furniture every year. Much of it still has value, yet too often it is sent to landfill because there are few practical alternatives.

Australian manufacturer Workspace Commercial Furniture believes that can change.

The company has launched Workspace Circular Solutions, a national take-back program that gives businesses, builders, project managers and government agencies a new way to manage furniture at the end of its first life. Rather than treating unwanted desks, chairs and workstations as waste, the program assesses whether they can be refurbished, repurposed or recycled, helping recover materials and extend product life wherever possible. 

The initiative marks a significant shift for the 115-year-old manufacturer, whose role has traditionally ended once furniture was delivered and installed.

Workspace Chief Executive Officer Tom Clark said customer expectations around sustainability had changed considerably over recent years.

"We're having different conversations with clients than we were five or ten years ago," Mr Clark said.

"It's no longer just about buying furniture. Organisations want to know what happens when that furniture reaches the end of its useful life, particularly as they're reporting against ESG commitments and looking for practical ways to reduce waste."

The program accepts commercial furniture regardless of where it was originally purchased. Following an on-site assessment, Workspace recommends the most appropriate recovery pathway based on the condition of the furniture, the materials involved and the client's objectives.

Items suitable for refurbishment may be repaired, reupholstered or modified for continued use. Others are dismantled so components and raw materials can be recovered through certified recycling partners. Where possible, products or materials are repurposed for new applications rather than discarded. 

For Workspace, the program builds on work the company has already been doing behind the scenes for several years.

The manufacturer has increasingly incorporated refurbishment projects into its operations, restoring furniture for clients, repurposing components and working with recycling partners to divert materials from landfill. The formal launch of Workspace Circular Solutions brings those capabilities together under a dedicated national service.

Mr Clark said the decision reflected a broader change across the construction and property sectors.

"The industry is becoming much more focused on the full life of a product, not just the point of purchase," he said.

"As manufacturers, we think we have a responsibility to be part of that conversation. We've always understood how furniture is made. It makes sense that we should also help customers understand the best way to recover value from it when it's no longer needed."

Workspace will use its existing national logistics network and delivery fleet to collect furniture before transporting it to its South Australian facility or approved recycling partners for processing. The company says using established transport and project management systems allows the service to integrate with office relocations and refurbishment programs without creating additional complexity for clients. 

The initiative also aligns with growing demand across the property and construction sectors for measurable sustainability outcomes.

The program gives participating organisations confidence that their furniture has been managed through responsible recovery pathways. Where applicable, documentation from certified recycling partners, including recycling certificates, can help demonstrate a genuine commitment to sustainability and circular economy practices. 

Workspace believes manufacturers are increasingly being expected to take greater responsibility for the products they place on the market, particularly as governments and industry continue to encourage circular economy principles.

The company has already embedded sustainability into its product development processes, becoming Australia's first commercial furniture manufacturer certified to ISO 14006 Eco Design. Workspace Circular Solutions extends that thinking beyond design and manufacturing by addressing what happens after furniture has completed its first lifecycle. 

Mr Clark said the program was intended to provide a practical solution rather than simply promote sustainability.

"Not every piece of furniture can be saved, and we're realistic about that," he said.

"But in many cases, there's still value there. Sometimes that's a product that can be refurbished, sometimes it's materials that can be recovered, and sometimes it's components that can be used again. If we can keep more furniture in circulation for longer, that's a better outcome than sending it straight to landfill."

While the initiative has been developed around commercial office furniture, Workspace expects demand from education, healthcare, government and large institutional projects, where refurbishment cycles often involve significant volumes of furniture.

For a company that has been manufacturing in Australia since 1911, Mr Clark sees the launch as a logical extension of the business.

"Good manufacturing isn't just about making products," he said.

"It's about standing behind them for as long as possible."
