Hens Parties Go Coastal

Australian hens parties are leaving the city behind. Destination hens weekends have become the standard for many bridal groups, with Byron Bay confirmed as Australia's most booked hens destination (Paperlust.co, 2026) and Cairns recording its strongest tourism numbers on record. Byron Bay's appeal is backed by evidence. Tourism Research Australia recorded 1.62 million visitors to the Byron Shire in 2023, up 10% on the previous year, with specialist hens operators established across the destination. Many bridal groups already book Byron Bay for engagement shoots or destination weddings, and the hens weekend builds around that trip. Wedding tourism and hens travel are converging, and Byron Bay now sits at the centre of the boutique wedding destination trend reshaping how groups celebrate.

Cairns tells a different story, but the direction is the same. Tourism Tropical North Queensland recorded AUD$1.2 billion in international visitor spending in 2024-25, a 24% year-on-year rise, with 2.7 million total visitors in 2024. The destination draws bridal groups seeking tropical celebration, Great Barrier Reef day trips, and warm weather year-round. The hens party trend is following the tourist trail north.

"We kept seeing Byron Bay and Cairns come up in enquiries from brides who'd already chosen the destination for their wedding or engagement shoot and wanted the entertainment to follow them there," said Tim Stanton, Founder of Hens Knights.
