Announcement posted by Australian Professional Conferences and Seminars 14 May 2012
Mining magnate, Professor Clive Palmer has claimed a $400 million-a-year profit and a visit from his proposed Titanic replica could be on the cards for Townsville in coming years, during a presentation at the second annual North Queensland Mining Processing and Energy Conference (NQ-MPEC) yesterday (May 14, 2012).
Professor Palmer delivered the keynote address at NQ-MPEC yesterday morning, touching on a range of topics including his plans to contest the Carbon Tax, the importance of foreign partnerships, treatment of the tailing lines at The Palmer Nickel and Cobalt Refinery (formerly Queensland Nickel's Yabulu Refinery), environmental protection and the recently announced Titanic replica.
In line with NQ-MPEC's Future Visions and a Snapshot of Today theme, Prof Palmer demonstrated a rosy outlook for the North's resource sectors.
"[North Queensland] has a great future," said Prof Palmer. "We took over the plant here and we've increased its capacity; by the end of next year we'll have up to 75,0000 tonnes of nickel capacity. Originally it had 35,000 tonnes capacity, we're producing 40,000 tonnes this year, so we see that expanding dramatically."
"We're now starting test work on the treatment of the tailing lines at Yabulu… we should have about $120-per-tonne profit, which will provide about a $400-million profit in Townsville, make everyone's job more secure at the refinery, and provide more money to go around the local community."
Prof Palmer said he was pleased to be able to attend the second annual NQ-MPEC Conference.
"It's about being in Townsville, being here and getting some feedback about what’s happening. The most important thing is to listen to people -- you don't want to assume you know what's going on, and being up here gives us a chance to listen to the industry, listen to what's happening and maybe change our views to do more for this State and this region.
"Townsville is great place to come and sometime the Titanic will be here once we finish building it in 2016."
Prof Palmer also attended the NQ-MPEC Gala Dinner last night, which was hosted by Federal Member for Herbert Ewen Jones. Guests were entertained by the motivational anecdotes and medal-winning skills of two-time Olympic gymnast Brennon Dowrick.
NQMPEC 2012 continues today with presentations from Shadow Mister for Energy and Resources Ian Macfarlane; Graeme Pollock, SMEC Australia; Darren Rawson-Harris, QR National; Ross Contarino, Townsville Enterprise Limited; Mark Roberts, Xstrata Copper; Pete Townson, Sucrogen; Scott Chalmers, Osmoflo; Robert Piper, Hatch; and Prof Yinghe He, James Cook University.
