Announcement posted by Australian Philharmonic Orchestra 09 Oct 2012
The Australian Philharmonic Orchestra (APO) today announced the launch of their ‘Timeless Classics’ Concerts on 27, 28 and 29 December in Sydney and New Year’s Eve in Melbourne. Featuring the renowned 65 piece APO orchestra, the concert will this year be headlined by some of Australia’s most talented popular and classical singers including Young Talent Time legend Denis Walter (MC), multi-talented stage performer Silvie Paladino, award-winning soprano Greta Bradman, ARIA award winner Anthony Callea, opera sensation Roy Best, and will be led by celebrated musical director and conductor John Foreman.
The APO will be performing six (matinee and evening) concerts: four shows in Sydney on 27, 28 and 29 December at the Sydney Opera House, and two in Melbourne on New Year’s Eve at Hamer Hall. A much loved event, the concerts attract sell-out crowds each year as many New Year’s Eve revellers make it an annual fixture in their social calendar, kicking off their celebrations at the concert and continuing on with the festivities afterwards.
A hallmark of the annual New Year’s Eve concerts, this year’s event will deliver an auditory feast for popular and classical music lovers. Audiences can expect to be entertained by music from their favourite artists, including scores from popular films, award-winning stage shows, and well-loved musicals and operas. From The Beatles and Elton John to Les Miserables and music from the film Dances with Wolves, the ‘Timeless Classics’ concert will delight and captivate audiences of all ages and musical tastes.
With 2013 marking 31 years since the APO performed their first New Year’s Eve show in Melbourne, this year’s concerts continue the orchestra company’s tradition of celebrating and bringing together the best in Australian popular and classical music talent.
Over 40 years in the Australian showbiz industry have made Denis Walter one of Australia's busiest and mostloved media identities. An alumni of the iconic Young Talent Time, Denis has emerged as oneof the country’s most versatile entertainers, shifting effortlessly between singing engagements, corporate hosting, presenting television news and hosting Melbourne's number one afternoon radio show on 3AW. With an album slated for release, the indefatigable Denis Walter is the perfect choice to not only MC this year’s event, but also feature as one of the headline stars.
A veteran of the London West End and darling of the annual ‘Carols by Candlelight’ concert, Silvie Paladino has forged a singing career which has seen her perform in some of the most iconic Australian and international musical productions including Les Miserables, Hair, Miss Saigon, Cats and Mamma Mia!. In addition to her own solo tour, Silvie has also performed with international singer Patrizio Buanne and also with renowned theatrical composer, Stephen Schwartz.
ARIA award nominated soprano Greta Bradman’s career has seen her perform with the country’s leading orchestras including the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Australian Philharmonic Orchestra to name a few. Greta has also performed alongside Aled Jones, Russell Watson and Il Divo on their respective Australian tours. A recipient of Critics Choice Award, most recently the 2012 APRA AMCOS SA 'performance of the year' award, Greta’s 2010 debut album was nominated for an ARIA award and her second album received wide critical acclaim.
Anthony Callea is one of Australia’s most successful recording artists and recognised performers. Since being introduced to the public through Australian Idol in 2004, he has released two albums and performed for international dignitaries including the late Luciano Pavarotti, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark, and also appeared as a special guest for touring international superstars including Diana Ross, Westlife, Celine Dion and more recently Whitney Houston.
With his debut operatic performance rewarded with a standing ovation, it’s unsurprising that Roy Best has fashioned a singing career which has seen him perform alongside some of Australia’s finest artists including Yvonne Kenny, Marina Prior and James Morrison. He has also worked with Australia’s leading orchestras including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Australian Pops Orchestra and The Queensland Orchestra (QSO).
One of Australia’s premier and most renowned musical directors, pianists and composers, John Foreman will be conducting this year’s APO concert. With a celebrated career which has seen him work alongside iconic Australian and international artists including Olivia Newton-John, Shirley Bassey, Chris Isaak, Tina Arena, Marcia Hines and Jessica Mauboy, John is a sought after musical director, producer and conductor.
“I am absolutely delighted to be conducting the Aussie Pops”, says John. “I am in awe of the musicianship of this group. I love their versatility and the way in which they embrace such a broad range of musical styles. They’re also one of the few orchestras whose players will, under the right circumstances, bust out a few dance moves during the performance”.
