Walking into the Australian Natural Soap Company, you might mistake it for an old-fashioned, European cheese deli.
Big slabs of soap that resemble gourmet cheese line the shop at Pran Central – old-fashioned scales will even be used to weigh the soap.
Launching next Monday on Chapel Street, Melbourne’s first ever soap deli is revolutionary in that all of its soaps and its packaging are completely natural and environmentally friendly.
All of the soaps at the Australian Natural Soap Company are totally natural, free of harmful chemicals, palm oil free, cruelty free and vegan.
The Australian Natural Soap Company only uses Natural Plant Oils
Soap makers Anthony Scherz and Emma Cook, like most people of their generation, have been brought up with the idea that real soap is bad for you.
“However, our hand-made, pH balanced soaps really are like a fine cheese. We use only natural plant oils, including essential oils, so they smell amazing and they’re also deeply moisturising and great for sensitive skin,” Emma said.
Rather than vegetable oils, the Australian Natural Soap Company uses natural plant oils such as macadamia oil and avocado oil.
Sustainability is the key to the Australian Natural Soap Company’s products
The company is strongly committed to sustainability. Besides being biodegradable and detergent free, the soaps are packaged sparingly, using recycled and renewable paper. Their soap holders even use reclaimed wood.
“It’s been estimated that the average person goes through 11 kilograms of soap each year - That not only means a huge amount of detergent going down our drains but also a huge amount of plastic ending up in land fill given most of us now use liquid soap,” Emma said.
The Australian Natural Soap Company’s soaps are Vegan, Cruelty Free and Palm Oil Free
“The palm oil industry has been devastating for orangutans and what’s worrying is it’s difficult for Australians to avoid the oil given it can be labelled a lot of different things, including vegetable oil,” Emma said.
“Orangutans are extremely intelligent and beautiful creatures that are worth much more than a cheap oil. And we think one of the best ways to help bring about change is to offer real alternatives to palm oil products.”
Oils used in the Australian Natural Soap Company’s soaps are sourced from Australian Farmers
“Australia has the best natural oils in the world,” Emma said.
“The majority of our oils are sourced from Australian farmers – in fact we can even tell you what region of Australia they have come from.”
The official opening of the Australian Natural Soap Company’s Chapel Street store in Pran Central (shop g34, 1/325 Chapel St, Prahran, next to the post office) will take off on Monday 2nd December 2013 from 9am.
