The Future of Energy in Australia? US embraces the future of energy as Australia moves to limit renewables
Announcement posted by Transitions Film Festival 20 Feb 2014
Big things are happening in the world of climate politics and renewable energy, but it seems Australia is heading in the opposite direction.
Last week saw the opening of the world's largest solar power station in the Mojave Desert, Nevada. Utilising the powerful Concentrated Solar Thermal technology, the IVANPAH SOLAR ELECTRIC GENERATING SYSTEM uses 300,000 synchronised mirrors to track the sun and direct its rays toward a central tower, creating 392 MegaWatts of power - enough for 140,000 homes in California, the equivalent of 400,000 metric tonnes of carbon in the atmosphere.
In the last week, The United States Government has announced a plan to work with China as part of a renewed commitment to climate talks in Paris next year. China, on their part, has upgraded their target for solar installations across their country from 10GW to 14GW in 2014. To give some context as to how large this is, AUSTRALIA'S entire electricity market is only 48 GW in total.
Meanwhile, the Australian Government continues to make moves in the opposite direction, continuing their attack on Australia's renewable energy industry. This week’s appointment of Dick Warburton, a known climate change skeptic to head the review of the Renewable Energy Target (RET) is just one more move in the ongoing assault of this new emerging industry.
