In 2013, Safe Work Australia reported that a staggering 232 deaths occurred due to falls at work between 2003 and 2011. Workers aged 45 years and over made up 70% of those who died.In addition 7730 workers compensation claims were made in 2010-11 for serious injury due to a fall, so on average 21 employees per day received a fall-related injury that required one or more weeks off work. Worksafe (WA) sets out the Code of Practice – Prevention of Falls at Workplaces Which outlines best practice and regulations when working at heights. The code advises that anyone working at heights must ensure they have a ‘Fall injury prevention system’ designed to stop a person’s fall and minimise the risk of injuries or harm.

A fall injury prevention system includes:

• Scaffolding;
• Restraint systems;
• Fall-arrest systems;
• Catch platforms;
• Safety nets; and
• Safety mesh.

The code also states that “choosing the most appropriate fall injury prevention system is essential”.
