Announcement posted by the little red company 14 Jul 2014
More than 225 writers, directors and performers will take part in next month’s South East Queensland Short+Sweet Festival; the world’s ‘biggest little arts festival’ for emerging and established theatre makers.
Entering its sixth year in South East Queensland in 2014, Short+Sweet takes to The Arts Centre Gold Coast from 9-17 August and Brisbane Powerhouse from 21-30 August, with a combined Gala Final at Brisbane Powerhouse on Sunday 28 September.
Festival Director Nathan Sibthorpe said he was ecstatic with the number of high quality entries for this year’s event, culminating in a diverse program of more than 50 original 10-minute works - Queensland’s largest ever Short+Sweet Festival lineup.
“Short+Sweet Festival is like a sushi train for live performance works and this year’s train is really powering,” Sibthorpe said.
“The 2014 program is a truly surprising mix encompassing one-person stand-up acts, new Australian drama, contemporary dance, musical songbook and even a little live erotic fiction.
“I am particularly excited for the new up-late cabaret strand, which proved incredibly popular amongst applicants. More than 25 new 10-minute cabaret works, performed by both local and visiting artists, will premiere at the Festival throughout the four week program.”
The cabaret program includes Belinda Raisin’s Obsessions of a Control Freak, the follow-up to her runaway debut hit Confessions of a Control Freak; Babushka’s I Can Keep A Secret, fresh from a sellout season at this year’s inaugural Queensland Cabaret Festival; Thirty Year Old Child, written and performed by Judy Hainsworth; and Cienda McNamara’s new one-woman show Hardly the Portrait of a Lady.
The theatre program, comprising 28 new 10-minute works, includes Elise Greig’s Flood, inspired by the recent catastrophic Brisbane floods; Jessica Palfrey’s Bitches, an anything-goes comedy exploring dog show elitism; and productions by local theatre makers Brenna-Lee Cooney, Ron Seeto, Lauren Sherritt, and independent companies Underground Productions, Spangled Aura, and Rocket Boy Ensemble.
The full program is divided into seven strands made up of 5-10 works in a single lineup, and each strand is attended by a panel of anonymous judges drawn from the local industry.
Participants compete for a number of coveted Festival titles, including Best Overall Production, Best Actor, Best Cabaret Artist, and Audience Choice.
Sibthorpe said Short+Sweet offered a great night out for those who like their entertainment served hard and fast.
“At just 10-minutes a pop, Short+Sweet is perfect entertainment for those with short attention spans. Each night offers a real mixed bag of shows, and it’s very much a lucky dip. There’s really nothing else like it.”
Tickets for the general public are on sale now for both The Art Centre Gold Coast (9-17 August) and Brisbane Powerhouse (21-30 August).
