Wollongong personal trainer, Rachel O'Neill explains why correcting your posture is important

Take a moment to analyse how you are sitting or standing right now. Are your shoulders slouched forward? Is your chest being pushed back? Does your head naturally look down at the floor?

Having a good posture is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. Wollongong personal trainer Rachel O’Neill talks about why having a good posture is important.

Aside from looking awkward and less confident a bad posture can cause damage to the body. Having a bad posture can cause an imbalance in how your muscles are working and misalign your spine. “Some muscles in your body are always working, so when you slouch you are causing these muscles to work harder than they need to” Rachel explains. This can cause aches and pains and overtime potential permanent damage.

“A great way to identify if you have good posture is by looking at the soles of your shoes” Rachel advises. If they often tend to wear more in one area or side, then you most likely have a bad posture. Personal trainers are educated on how to analyse a person’s body alignment and posture. The team at Vision Personal Training Wollongong, always take a client’s posture into account when creating training programs for each member.

By correcting your posture there are multiple physical and mental benefits. Many people spend long periods of time sitting at desks or sitting and watching television. If you slouch overtime you neck and back will begin to ache, this is your body telling you that you are not sitting correctly.

A person with a good posture is less likely to experience headaches, has a healthy oxygen intake and is less likely to experience back problems. When you sit up straight your lungs are able to operate at full capacity and as a result you will have more energy from day-to-day. Research has also found that people with a good posture are naturally more confident and appear as being more ‘successful’ to others.

Correcting your posture will depend on your age and the severity of your hunch. To achieve the correct posture from your head right through to your toes consult a personal trainer. During their first consultation or session they will take the time to analyse your natural stance and body’s alignment.
