Mirra Jensen releases 4 re-imagined Christmas Carols as part of PhD research project.

Mirra Jensen is currently undertaking an intriguing and interesting practice based PhD on the topic of ancient tunings. The fact that she has selected Christmas Carols to apply the ancient tunings just increases the charm. The topic explores the application and experience of ancient tunings in the creation of new music in the modern era using all the technology that is available today. The electronic influence is evident in her re-imaginings of these favorite carols.

The 4 new Christmas singles which Mirra has released for 2014 go by the names of Coventry Carol, O Holy Night, Angels from the Realms of Glory and Midnight Clear. Opening the links and listening to the carols can be mesmerizing taking the listener to another realm. The melancholy feel with the finest classic overtones are reminiscent of the ancient times, which brings a feeling of soothing, comfort and sanctuary.

The carols use the ancient Pythagorean Tuning, which arguably creates a richer, more resonant experience for the listener; this aspect is a key feature of her PhD research thesis. The research focuses on the experiential and practical performance considerations which come about through using frequencies in music set at the Pythagorean ‘pure intervals’. The research is based on the application of this tuning system to understand all aspects of the overall performance.
