MEDIA RELEASE
Monday 16 March
It might not be in the list of top 10 international destinations but Greater Hamilton in Victoria’s western district region does have one requirement in common - visitors need to show their passport on entry, albeit for one super-sized ‘Open Weekend’ on June 20 - 21.
The passport initiative is part of a new campaign by Southern Grampians Shire Council to boost the region’s population, skills and economic and cultural diversity, plus give visitors the opportunity to experience old-fashioned country hospitality.
Southern Grampians Shire Council manager of economic development and tourism, Hugh Koch, said those lucky enough to secure a passport at the Regional Victoria Living Expo (1-3 May) will experience the full VIP treatment, complete with a welcome from the Mayor and a picnic lunch.
“The entire region is throwing is opening its doors on June 20-21 so people can experience all that the region has to offer - but only if they have a ‘Passport to a Better Life.’
“We’ve even managed to coordinate a country race meet and a local footy match for the weekend and local businesses have come to the party with complimentary offers on accommodation, food and great activities.
“The Greater Hamilton region is ideal for young families or couples who want to spend more time together and enjoy life, more than they might in the city. There is an abundance of opportunities and a rich lifestyle here that people really don’t know about until they see it for themselves.
“The Open Weekend is the perfect excuse for visitors to come for a weekend and then fall in love with the area,” said Koch.
With passport in hand, visitors will benefit from complimentary offers and value-adds to enjoy the best of Greater Hamilton’s wineries, restaurants, cafes, culture and entertainment. The Passport will also provide helpful information about the local schools, hospitals, real estate, sports centres and other local facilities.
