Further information:
The siege of Tobruk lasted 242 days, making it the longest in modern military history. The “Rats of Tobruk” name came about after Radio Berlin described the Australians as ‘caught like rats in a trap’. With typically Australian dry wit, the Australian soldiers reclaimed the names a badge of pride, even going so far as to strike their own unofficial medal bearing the likeness of a rat.
