Snapchat joined Instagram and Facebook in clarifying in their privacy policy that Snapchat reserves the rights to a royalty-free, worldwide license to user’s content published under the “Public Setting”. This allows Snapchat to curate collections of Snapchat content from offline events like concerts and sports games for their Live Story feature.
First launched in 2011, the social networking app became popular among young people in particular for its “disappearing” photo messages that can’t be viewed again once they have been opened. However not only Australian AFL footballer Jake Carlisle probably wishes he never used the app after a video he posted on Snapchat went public.
Facebook and Instagram never claimed they would delete any content posted by their users and been under constant criticism for the lack of privacy. The Internet never forgets and the recent warning by a German police force reemphasized to avoid posting photos of your loved ones online.
Child protection charity the NSPCC said in a statement: "All parents should feel free to enjoy taking photos of their children and sharing them with friends and family. However, we should all be careful when posting photos online.
"We know that sex offenders are able to doctor innocent family photos of children, and developments in photo editing software have made this easier.
"So if parents do publish photos of their children online, they should take care to ensure that they have checked their privacy settings and are happy about who can see and share them."
