Newly listed charity, Take Heart Australia (THA) and its thousands of volunteers, are on a mission to dramatically decrease deaths in CPR, kicking things off on Take Heart Australia Day on Monday November 30. For the first time, the country’s leading medical offices and emergency service professionals have joined forces to up-skill Aussies and launch the country’s biggest campaign on CPR education.

STATS
- Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) accounts for almost 20 % of total deaths in Australia - more than lung cancer, accidents and strokes combined
- SCA can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time
- 30,000 Aussies suffer Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) every year… but only 9-10% survive.
- More than 500 lives are unnecessarily lost to Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) every week.
- Cities like Seattle, have survival rates around 60% for many cardiac arrests because ¾ of their population is trained in CPR
- After the heart stops, it takes 4-5 minutes for permanent brain damage to kick in… but on average, it takes 8-10 minutes for an ambulance to arrive…
- Every year, 12,000 Aussies die who potentially could be saved by a bystander- hundreds are under the age of 35
INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITIES
- Professor Paul Middleton, Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at University of Sydney and founder of Take Heart Australia. Committed to shifting the stats around SCA in Australia, Professor Paul formed THA after his own experience saving a life while studying medicine in his teens in the UK in the 1980’s
- Cassandra Scott – Survivor of SCA. Cassandra was swimming at Coogee Beach when she went into sudden cardiac arrest. Fellow swimmer Neil Clugston, lifeguard on duty Luke Twitchings, and emergency physician Dr. Matthew Oliver performed CPR until Cassandra was eventually able to gain a pulse and could breathe and sit up on her own
- Resus Andy – A cheeky resuscitation mannequin who was accidentally bestowed life during a routine CPR drill. A new puppet operated by award-winning puppeteer Heath McIvor (best known as the talented hand behind Randy Feltface of Sammy J and Randy in Ricketts Lane, but also his puppetry work on productions such as The Hobbit, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Walking With Dinosaurs) Take a look at the 1st video of the series HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp7vkT2NYx8
- We also have other case studies available for interview including an 18 year old who was revived at school, and medical professionals including NSW Ambulance.
THE RESUS ANDY WEB-SERIES
RESUS ANDY & TEGAN is not only laugh-out-loud funny and irreverent, it’s all about relaying the dismal statistics around Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Australia and telling everyday Aussies how they each have the power to change them.
