Hader Clinic offers hope to ice families
Australia’s ice problem has more than doubled in less than a decade and it seems set to keep growing.
A national taskforce into the drug found that policing and tighter legislation alone cannot solve the problem. Information, family support and community engagement are crucial to reducing the spread of ice.
The Hader Clinic Queensland’s Managing Director Mel Symon said ice addiction can ruin whole families, affecting the addict’s physical, financial, mental and social wellbeing.
“Ice is a unique drug both in the way it affects the user and in the challenge it presents to those trying to prevent its spread,” Ms Symon said.
“Because it’s made in a lab, there’s a regular supply and demand keeps going up. For a family whose loved one becomes addicted to ice, the problem can seem hopeless. But it’s not. We can help addicts and their families recover.”
The Hader Clinic is holding a free ice community forum next month for families who know or suspect a loved one may be using the destructive drug. Ice is now thought to be the second most commonly used drug in Australia, after marijuana, outstripping ecstasy, heroin and cocaine.
Medical Director of Addiction Sciences Queensland Dr Christian Rowan MP will share his insights into the rise of ice abuse in Queensland. Dr Rowan will be joined by Jackson Oppy whose personal account of overcoming ice addiction is a powerful testament to the value of a supportive network, and Clinical Psychologist Dr Louise DuChesne who has spent the past two decades helping addicts recover.
“The aim of the night is to provide insight into the personal and psychological suffering of those addicted to drugs, especially ice,” said Mel Symons.
“Hearing the stories of those who have worked with addicts and experienced the torment of addiction will provide starting point for families and addicts wanting to beat ice abuse.
“I encourage anyone concerned that a loved one may be using ice or other amphetamines to come along and find out what help is available.”
The Hader Clinic offers a range of services to assist recovery from addiction and substance abuse, including counselling, residential rehabilitation retreats, family programs, intervention, and transitional housing.
The ice additional forum will be held on Thursday 20 October from 6.30-8.30pm at the Hotel Grand Chancellor Brisbane. To register for this free event, call 1300 856 847.
