Cambodian Girls Step into a Bright Future with Support from an Australian Charity

Announcement posted by Watermelon Communications 02 Mar 2017

International Women's Day 2017 #BeBoldForChange
Four inspiring young Cambodian women are celebrating a brighter future this International Women’s Day thanks to the Step2 Foundation. The young Cambodian women have been accepted to study teaching at the Australian Centre of Education (ACE) in Siem Reap, Cambodia with the financial support of the Step2 Foundation.

As only one third of Cambodian children go on to secondary education, very few of those in rural areas, these young women no longer face the threat of poverty and long days working in a field where they are vulnerable to poor working conditions. Gaining qualifications that lead to employment in a respected profession will change their lives forever.

‘The bleak reality that faces so many Cambodian children, particularly girls, saddens me beyond belief,’ said Zeynep Roberts, Foundation Director and Founder. ‘I am so proud of Porka, Sophea, Phaiia, and Varnsi for the hard work they have put into being accepted to ACE (Australian Centre for Education). I’m thrilled that the Step2 Foundation can support them in reaching their dreams and facilitate their future employment’.

Path Porka, the youngest of four children in a farming family stated in her ACE application, ‘I want to help the children to get the knowledge and get a good job in their future’.

Reaching level 12 qualifications and achieving a diploma costs just under AU$2000 at ACE. With the average Cambodia family earning less than this per annum, attendance would not be possible for Path without the support of Step2 Foundation. Path and her three friends will continue their employment in the Svaychey village school on completion of their diploma.

Through development of the Svaychey village school, the Step2 Foundation has positively impacted on the Siem Reap community on a social and socio-economic level. Supporting the girls to take this next step and return as teachers contributes to the development of a resilient and self-sustaining community.
