Never one for the boring or judgemental styles of Quit Smoking Therapy- hypnotherapist and practitioner Julia Lorent is thumbing the norms and kicking off QuitTober by holding a symbolic smoking ceremony to honour her mother and other smokers who have suffered from their addictions and lost lives.
Tobacco in Australia have proven that the lowest-income households spending on tobacco products as a segment of total household weekly spending were over double that of the highest income households in recent studies. This fact signifies that it is also difficult for lower income households to set aside household income to pay for services that assist with the process of quitting smoking. A fact that Julia states is grossly unfair and a gap that needs to be bridged.
QUIT Tober is an initiative created by the Melbourne QUIT Smoking Clinic which will run for the month of October. It will offer clients 2 Consultations, 1 x 90-minute initial hypnotherapy consultation and a 60 minute Re-inforcement consultation. at a discounted rate of $360. Quit Tober will be running from the 1st of October 2017- 31st of October 2017. For many the price of $360 will be a lifesaver, replacing the thousands of dollars being spent each year on the cancerous and dangerous practise of tobacco smoking.
“The initial concept of QuitTober was a way I could create a legacy of my mother who passed away from lung cancer due to cigarettes. It has become much more than that now, it is kind of reflective memorial for those who have passed away or who are struggling with smoking related illnesses,” says Julia.
QuitTober is kicked with a smoking ceremony in which Julia and her siblings will gather at her sisters farm and burn the contents of the rather large glass cylinder from Julia’s office which houses all the discarded cigarette packets of clients who have quit smoking. The Melbourne QUIT Smoking Clinic perform this smoking ceremony 4 times a year to commemorate the victims who have lost their lives to smoking. “There is an element of symbolism in this ceremony, of hope, of remembrance and irony. It is these symbolic gestures that create something of meaning.”
The Melbourne QUIT Smoking Clinic runs one-on-one consultations and has helped people all over the world to quit smoking. Skype consultations can be arranged for clients who may not be able to attend it in person.
Quit-Tober has been a great success in previous years and Julia predicts that this year will be no exception due to an increased emphasis in clients wanting to regain a healthy lifestyle, the increase in the cost of cigarettes and an increase in mortgage stress for a lot of people.
