UniSuper continues to attract top analysts

Announcement posted by UniSuper 19 Oct 2017

19 October 2017

UniSuper, the $60 billion superannuation fund for Australia’s higher education and research sector, recently announced the appointment of Matt Spence, Senior Analyst – Infrastructure and Andrew Hill, Senior Analyst – Financials, as it continues to bolster its in-house investment management capability.

Both Matt Spence and Andrew Hill were top rated analysts in their respective industry sectors, most recently with Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Their appointments follow other senior hires from the stockbroking and investment banking sector to UniSuper, joining Lou Capparelli previously with Evans & Partners, and Jarrod McDonald previously with JP Morgan, who have already established themselves at the Fund. The new hires will add further depth and breadth to the highly experienced equities team.

The transition from the sell-side to superannuation investment is a relatively recent trend, but one that is gathering pace. UniSuper is well placed to capitalise on the trend, having led the profit-for-member sector in developing its in-house capabilities. Currently, more than 60% of UniSuper’s funds are managed by internal teams.

UniSuper’s Chief Investment Officer John Pearce said of the appointments: “I’m delighted with the calibre of analyst we’ve been able to attract. I think it speaks volumes for UniSuper’s reputation as a market leader, and that reputation creates its own momentum.

“We have managed to build a team based and competitive culture that is delivering excellent returns for our members, and I expect that Matt and Andrew will prove to be valuable additions.”

Matt Spence will commence with UniSuper in December 2017 and Andrew Hill will start in January 2018.
