In Kashmir, curfews once meant barricades, barbed wire, and soldiers at street corners. Today, they arrive differently with a blocked Instagram account.
Last week, the social media handles of Kashmir Life, Greater Kashmir and Rising Kashmir were restricted on Facebook and Instagram after they posted videos of protests across the Valley. The demonstrations followed the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a US-Israel operation. Authorities justified the move by citing “fake news and misinformation” during a tense period that saw protests in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk, Budgam and Kargil, along with school closures and slowed internet speeds.
But that's now even the troubling part because these weren’t shadowy Telegram channels or anonymous rumour mills. They were some of the Valley’s most established newsrooms.
PDP MLA Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi called the restrictions “an assault

As the world gears up to celebrate International Women's Day on Sunday, three senior journalists have described what it is to be a woman journalist in India in a video put out by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) yesterday. Basically, three words sum it up: Violence, harassment and slut shaming.
While journalists of all genders are targeted regularly in social media, senior journalist Neha Dixit points out that when a woman journalist is involved it "immediately becomes a physical or a sexual threat". She goes on to add that when a male journalist writes a critical story, he is branded as "paid or corrupt" but when a woman is involved, she is called a "slut or prostitute". The other two women journalists in the video, Shahina KK and Dhanya Rajendran, concur.
As a platform covering media news and developments in India, our editorial team has put out countless reports of women getting harassed while doing their job
