Canales makes a splash in Canberra
By Elliott Richardson in Media News on Friday, 23rd October 2020 at 10:49amAfter more than 12 months under the Pedestrian umbrella writing for Gizmodo and Lifehacker, Sarah Basford Canales has swapped the hustle and bustle of Sydney for the relative quiet of Canberra.

Moving to the Canberra Times, Canales is now a politics and public sector reporter, something she says has always been an interest of hers.
“Political reporting is something I've always been interested in doing. Back when I was an idealistic uni student, my plan was to become an investigative reporter in the political space. While my ambitions of travelling to Russia to uncover deep-seated corruption have waned considerably - I'm sure my mum's happy about it too - it's still something I'm passionate about,” she says.

Beginning with the International Film Festival of India that typically happens in November to the various literary festivals that have now mushroomed all over the country from remote hilly areas like Wayanad to the mother-of-all-lit fests, the Jaipur Literature Festival, that usually takes place sometime in January-February, there is a festival to suit everyone's artistic taste and style these days.
If one were to go by the media reports that have appeared so far this week, yet another festival has been added to this long list and this one is dedicated to journalism. The Global Festival of Journalism and AVGC Noida 2026 opened with much fanfare on Monday, according to media reports, most of which came with a disclaimer that the media houses were in no way responsible for the authenticity of the published content.

THE BRIEF: Hush the Herald lawyers sang
By Tony Bosworth in Media News on Tuesday, 17th February 2026 at 6:08am
Morning, welcome to Tuesday and The Australian's NSW editor Stephen Rice has a front page story around, as he puts it, an "extraordinary payment" which gets an airing today on the front page of the national broadsheet, though not an exclusive which is passing strange because The Oz like to have at least five on the front page - today there are just two and 'NINE'S HUSH-MONEY SCANDAL' is not one of them. That aside it is a cracker of a piece focussing on - says The Oz - a payment of $700,000 "to silence mistress in Roberts-Smith case after allegations against lionised journalist". That journalist is Nine's Walkley-Award-winning Nick McKenzie who writes for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age and the story revolves around ex-SAS officer Ben Roberts-Smith's unsuccessful series of court cases. The 'hush-money story has come out now because a judge lifted a suppression order on the payment agreement. Defini
