THE BRIEF: Albo bomb threat, train claims hit the buffers, our new man in Washington

By Tony Bosworth in Media News on
Morning and welcome to Wednesday and a bomb threat early yesterday evening against PM Albanese was poorly timed - at least it was for the print editions - though of course it's covered in some detail in the online editions this morning. At Guardian Australia political editor Tom McIlroy has that story and reports, "the prime minister was moved from The Lodge to another location at about 6pm while an investigation was carried out. He was able to return after 9pm". Earlier on Tuesday, Albanese recorded an hour-long interview with Nine journalist Karl Stefanovic at The Lodge, for Karlos's new podcast, which clearly gets a bit of free publicity.  According to McIlroy, "Albanese and other federal MPs have faced a number of security threats in recent months. The prime minister has had a more visible than usual security presence at recent events. In October last year, the AFP commissioner, Krissy Barrett, announced the establishment of new na

Accreditation row: Desk journalists protest in Telangana

By Staff Writer in Media News on
Desk journalists across Telangana intensified their agitation on Monday, asserting that their struggle will continue until the government issues accreditation cards to all eligible desk journalists. The protest was organised under the banner of the Desk Journalists Federation of Telangana (DJFT), with a large number of journalists staging a dharna in front of the I&PR Commissioner’s office at Masab Tank in Hyderabad, Telangana Today reported. Several journalist associations extended solidarity to the protest. Addressing the gathering, DJFT President Jyothi Basu and General Secretary Mastan demanded a substantial increase in the number of accreditation cards. They sought an enhancement from the existing eight cards to 15 for TV channels, 18 for the Hyderabad City Desk, 20 for the Central Desk and 15 for TV channels. They also called for simplification of the application process and extension of the eligibility period for cartoonists. A memorandum outlining these demands was lat

FOURTH RIGHT: Who’s really surviving FY26 - print, radio or algorithms?

By Pragadish Kirubakaran in Media News on
Image edited by Dinesh Raj M   The Q3 FY26 numbers tell a story that’s more interesting than the headline “steady quarter” suggests. Yes, India’s print industry didn’t collapse. But it didn’t exactly sprint either. What we’re looking at is a sector in transition, not stability — as reflected in the Q3 earnings reported by Exchange4media, Financial Express, and company filings. Take HT Media. Revenue rose 1.4 per cent year-on-year to Rs 496.61 crore in Q3 FY26, even as losses widened. The real shift came from digital, which grew 29.5 per cent YoY to Rs 66.67 crore, according to the company’s stock exchange filing and coverage by Exchange4media and Business Standard. That’s no longer an ancillary vertical. It’s the growth lever. Jagran Prakashan reported a 7.7 per cent drop in revenue to Rs 476.71 crore and a 12 per cent decline in net profit, as per its quarterly filing covered by Financial Express and Mint. D

THE BRIEF: It's a Don deal, media exits, the train now waiting, blood diamonds...

By Tony Bosworth in Media News on
Morning, welcome to Tuesday and yes of course it will be the tallest building in Australia. News today that the Trump family has signed a deal to build a branded hotel at Surfer's Paradise on the Gold Coast, as originally reported exclusively by the Courier-Mail back in January. And now there's an artist's impression, which if you ask me places the glitzy building a little too close to the sea, but then again Mr Trump doesn't believe in climate change potentially causing sea rise levels, so she'll be right. The Courier-Mail story today is by Andrew Potts and Paul Weston with just Potts getting his byline on page 1 of the print edition and Weston added inside where the expanded detail is.  The story also steps from tabloid land to the broadsheets with the print edition of The Australian Financial Review giving it plenty of space this morning in a story by Brittney Levinson ('Deal done for Trump tower on Gold Coast'). The AFR also has l

Loyalakpa is the Editor-in-Chief of the Manipuri vernacular daily Naharolgi Thoudang and President of the Manipur Hockey Association. According to the IJU, the attack occurred around 10 pm on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, when armed miscreants intercepted Loyalakpa’s vehicle near the Hatta War Cemetery in Imphal East. The assailants allegedly fired at least two rounds at his car, dragged him out, and assaulted him with blunt objects, causing serious injuries to his face and teeth. He was rushed to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment. In a joint statement, IJU President Geetartha Pathak and Secretary General Vinod Kohli termed the incident a calculated attempt to muzzle the free press.
