Cadets: The big lesson Seven’s McLachlan learnt.

By Will McLennan in Media News on
Early-career journalist Tim McLachlan says one of the biggest lessons he's learnt is that "no story is too big or too small”, pointing to a story he did on a Sutherland-based All Abilities soccer team around the World Cup.  “The positive feedback from that story was phenomenal. It made me appreciate that there are always people who are interested in those stories,” he told Influencing.  “It's a real privilege to be able to tell those people's stories, and also humbling seeing how grateful they were that I had come to talk to them. There's a lot of good in journalism is what I'm learning.” McLachlan is Seven’s multimedia journalist, working as part of the network's broadcast team. He's held the role since October 2025, having previously worked as a morning TV social producer at the network from July 2024 — his first full-time media gig upon graduating from the University of Sydney in 2023.  His current role sees him initially converting news packages for social m

Legacy media's video challenge

By Nigel Bowen in Media News on
Nineteen per cent of young Americans watch local television news. The figure has travelled far and wide, not least on the LinkedIn feeds of journos and PRs. But while the news for legacy media is grim, it’s not quite as dire as might be imagined.   The 19 per cent figure comes from Redefining Local, a report published by Harvard Kennedy School's Shorenstein Center in April. It surveyed 1,012 Americans aged 18 to 34 who consume news at least weekly. Fifty-five per cent still watch a local newscast on television each week. Sixty-one per cent use a local station's app. Local outlets rank ahead of Reddit, newsletters and national news websites as weekly sources. The 19 per cent measures something else: preference. Asked how they would most like to receive news from a local TV station, 44 per cent chose social media, 19 per cent chose the broadcast and 9 per cent chose an app. In short, the legacy media has a delivery problem, more than one of outright rejection. Press body slams FIR against Anandabazar Patrika journalists over "saffron hooliganism" headline

By Meena R. Prashant in Media News on
The Federation of Press Clubs has condemned the registration of an FIR against Anandabazar Patrika's editorial team, calling it a serious threat to press freedom. The FIR was registered on August 28 at Bowbazar Police Station in central Kolkata, naming Ishani Dutta Ray, the newspaper's editor and Soma Mukherjee individually, along with unnamed members of its editorial team. It was filed under Sections 196, 299, 3(5) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, over Anandabazar Patrika's coverage of the August 21 clashes at Jadavpur University, in which it used the headline "Gerua Gundami" ("saffron hooliganism") to describe the vandalisation of the university's gate emblem. The Federation said the report did not name or target any particular community. The complaint was filed by Sanjay Shastri Maharaj, who  argued that saffron is associated with monasticism and renunciation, and that pairing it with "hooliganism" hurt the religious sentiments of "crores of Hindus."
