Senior journalist and theatre personality Shivananda Tagadur has been selected for the Karnataka Nataka Akademi Award in recognition of his contribution to theatre. The Karnataka Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) felicitated Tagadur at its state executive committee meeting held at the DVG Hall in Revenue Bhavan on Monday, August 31. Senior journalist N. Ravikumar said Tagadur had been actively involved in people’s movements even before entering journalism and had used theatre as a medium for social transformation. He said the award was not only a recognition of Tagadur’s contribution to theatre but also an honour for working journalists in Karnataka. KUWJ office-bearers and journalists from various districts congratulated and felicitated Tagadur at the event.    

The Federation of Press Clubs has condemned the registration of an FIR against Anandabazar Patrika's editorial team, calling it a serious threat to press freedom. The FIR was registered on August 28 at Bowbazar Police Station in central Kolkata, naming Ishani Dutta Ray, the newspaper's editor and Soma Mukherjee individually, along with unnamed members of its editorial team. It was filed under Sections 196, 299, 3(5) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, over Anandabazar Patrika's coverage of the August 21 clashes at Jadavpur University, in which it used the headline "Gerua Gundami" ("saffron hooliganism") to describe the vandalisation of the university's gate emblem. The Federation said the report did not name or target any particular community. The complaint was filed by Sanjay Shastri Maharaj, who  argued that saffron is associated with monasticism and renunciation, and that pairing it with "hooliganism" hurt the religious sentiments of "crores of Hindus." Last night’s episode of Media Watch focused on Chinese state media's coverage of the Nepal/Tibet flooding crisis.  After dedicating the first half of the package to coverage of the flooding, host Linton Besser noted one example of Chinese media focusing more on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s comments on the disaster than the disaster itself. Besser noted how footage from the state broadcaster focused on Chinese rescuers arriving at the scene of the floods, before drone shots of the disaster and a live cross to emergency camps.  He said, “By the evening of the second day of the crisis, China Central Television was broadcasting visions of survivors, none of whom were interviewed, as best as we can see. The Indian Journalists Association (IJA) formed its Campierganj tehsil unit in Gorakhpur at a meeting held on Sunday. Devendra Pratap Singh was unanimously elected as its president.  A large number of journalists and organisation officials attended the meeting. They discussed journalists’ interests, their problems and ways to strengthen the organisation.  After his election, Singh thanked the members and said he would carry out his responsibilities with dedication and honesty. He also promised to work for the interests and welfare of journalists and strengthen the organisation.  IJA officials said journalists were an important pillar of democracy and stressed the need to protect their dignity, safety and rights through unity and cooperation.  The meeting was attended by several journalists and IJA members, including Surendra Singh, Rakesh Kumar, Keshav Chandra Shukla, Anil Kumar, Yogendra Kumar Agrahari, Dayanand, Sunil
