Prime Creative takes over Quarry and Insight

Quarry Magazine (photo credit: Prime Creative Media)Prime Creative Media has assumed the reins of industry titles Quarry (pictured) and Insight from Gunnamatta Media. 

The move will see all of Quarry and Insight’s editorial work for print and digital content, their websites, and its directories run out of Prime Creative’s South Melbourne and Sydney offices. 

Damian Christie has agreed to stay on as Quarry’s editor. He has been at the post for 11 years. Prime Creative will also continue Gunnamatta’s working relationship with the Institute of Quarrying Australia.

Insight assistant editor Callum Glennen and reporter Myles Hume are also going forward with Prime Creative Media. They have been with Gunnamatta for almost a year. 

“We have been working in partnership with Gunnamatta Media to make the transition as smooth as possible for our advertisers and our readers. We will be continuing to build upon the work of Gunnamatta Media, with further investments into the brand, including a new digital platform that will be launched in the coming weeks,” said Prime Creative Media CEO John Murphy.

Bardas signs with Val Morgan

Val Morgan Digital has hired Amanda Bardas as the new executive editor of its digital publishing arm.

She was accepted for the job on account of her eight years’ experience in the local fashion publishing scene, roughly half of it with Allure Media, where she rose from fashion editor of Who What Wear Australia to executive editor. 

“I’m looking forward to leading our team as we build and launch a new publishing platform that fills a gap in the Australian market for content that unlocks rich conversations and drives a deeper understanding of entertainment, life and style, wellness and culture,” said Bardas.

Fordham to join NewsCast

NewsCorp Australia has appointed Del Fordham as NewsCast’s head of audio. 

He will collaborate with NewsCast’s component brands in the development and production of original audio material, and help increase their audience engagement. NewsCast chief and News Corp Australia GM for commercial networks Ainslee O’Brien will be Fordham’s immediate superior. 

Fordham has over 15 years’ experience in the audio content field, having produced and managed shows for companies including the ABC, Southern Cross Austereo, and NOVA Entertainment. 

“I’m passionate about original productions, on-demand content and bringing together different creators and content pillars to create synergies. Our growth strategy and upcoming original content slate will only build on the great momentum NewsCast has,” said Fordham.

The Guardian offers extra NZ coverage

The Australian edition of The Guardian newspaper will have more content pieces about New Zealand.

International news editor Bonnie Malkin said expanding the paper’s New Zealand coverage was warranted after uncovering strong interest from Kiwi readers for existing articles. The new section will feature articles with themes relevant to NZ readers such as social justice, social inequality, indigenous affairs, environmental issues, politics, and sports.

To cover the new content load, the Guardian is seeking new freelance staff to supplant a full-time and a part-time journalist currently on the rolls. 

Meanwhile, the paper also announced the creation of a new Lifestyle section, with former TimeOut Sydney/Melbourne editorial director Alyx Gorman as its editor. The section will offer Australian-themed stories from an array of contributors including MasterChef Australia season II winner Adam Liaw and restauranteur Palisa Anderson.

Fray joins Private Media

Peter Fray has signed up with Private Media as its new editor-in-chief. 

The new opportunity is a two-fold role for Fray. The editor-in-chief role will have him running oversight for news brands Crikey, Smart Company, and The Mandarin. He will also be the managing editor for Crikey and its INQ investigative journalism division. 

Fray comes into Private with a sterling record to boot. Currently working at UTS as a journalism professor and co-director of the university’s Centre for Media Transition, Fray had previously been editor/EIC/publisher of the Sydney Morning Herald and later founded his own political news arm, PolitiFact Australia. He also took up editor posts at The Canberra Times and The Age.

Kruger resigns on air

Channel Nine’s Sonia Kruger has resigned on-air from her position as co-host of Today Extra, appearing poised to return to Channel Seven.
After eight fabulous years, I'm leaving the show and the Nine Network. I've had an amazing time here and I've been privileged to work on some top-shelf programs,” Kruger said.
She will finish up her role on 15 November after eight years with the network. Alongside being co-host of Today Extra, she also hosted singing reality show, The Voice.
Channel Seven is yet to confirm that Kruger is returning, although it’s believed she will host the network’s reboot of Big Brother, a show she hosted from 2012-2014 at Nine.
The move comes after it was announced Georgie Gardner would be leaving the Today Show with Karl Stefanovic returning to the breakfast slot alongside Allison Langdon.

ABC stops live Olympic radio broadcast

The ABC will no longer carry live radio broadcasts of the Olympics, starting with next year’s Summer Games in Tokyo (pictured).

The national broadcaster announced that the end of the live radio coverage was due to budget issues and the availability of other formats in accessing content from the Games. 

The Sydney Morning Herald later claimed from sources that ABC had problems managing staff assignments for the two-week-long event. The move ends a long run that started at the Helsinki Summer Games in 1952.

ABC News and Grandstand, however, will fill continue with daily updates. ABC had recently purchased radio broadcast rights to the Games from exclusive carrier Seven.

Reactions came quickly afterwards. 

ABC Grandstand's Alister Nicholson expressed dejection at the move, considering he was part of the network’s small crew that went to Rio de Janeiro three years ago.
