Tripura BJP chief expresses displeasure over remarks against journalists

Tripura BJP president Abhishek Deb Roy has expressed dissatisfaction over the alleged derogatory remarks made against the state's journalist community by former Tripura BJP IT Cell head Chandan Debnath, according to the Journalist Development Union of Tripura (JDUT). Speaking to Influencing after a meeting with Roy in Agartala on Monday, JDUT General Secretary Raju Bhowmik said the BJP leader informed the delegation that the previous state party unit had been dissolved following his appointment and that a new team would be constituted soon. "Mr. Roy stated that since he has taken charge of the BJP unit in Tripura, the previous team has been dissolved and a new team will be formed soon. Thus, Debnath holds no position," Bhowmik said. According to Bhowmik, Roy also conveyed his displeasure over Debnath's remarks and indicated that he may not be given any position in the new state unit. Legal journalist Ratna Singh criticised the practice of paid VIP darshan at major temples, saying access to places of worship should not depend on a devotee's ability to pay.  In a post on X, Singh argued that while public debate often focuses on alleged misuse of temple donations, the long-standing system of paid VIP darshan has received little scrutiny. The National Union of Journalists (India) [NUJ(I)] has released the list of nominations received for its 2026–2028 elections after the nomination process closed at 5 p.m. on July 7, 2026.  The list shows multiple nominations for several key posts, indicating contests for various positions. Rakesh Thapliyal has been nominated for the post of President, while Rakesh Kumar Sharma is in the fray for Secretary General. R.C. Kannoujia has been nominated for Treasurer. The Vice President's post has attracted nine candidates—Virendra Singh, MDVSR Punnam Raju, M. Yugandhar Reddy, Silveri Srisailam, Someshwar Boral, Prasanta Chakraborty, Rajiv Nayanam, Dr Rajnesh Rana, and Arvind Singh.  According to NUJ(I), all nominations were received by its office on or before the official deadline of 5 p.m. on July 7, 2026, and will now proceed to the next stage of the election process.
