Adelaide Telstra Business Awards finalist proves business and babies not only mix - they’re a winning formula

Adelaide local Sian Burton is the brains behind Lotus Consulting, an award-winning coaching and business development agency that helps women start and run successful healthcare businesses, all while juggling the demands of babies, children and family. Lotus Consulting is one of six South Australian finalists in the Accelerating Women category of the 2022 Telstra Best of Business Awards.

“We’ve found that business and babies really do mix,” Mrs Burton said, “and with the right approach and support - it can in fact be a winning formula.”

The online coaching business with healthcare clients in Australia and the United States provides service-based healthcare businesses with the tools and resources necessary to establish and grow successful, family-friendly local businesses.

Mrs Burton said there was still a gender imbalance in the entrepreneurial space, with many women still having to play catch up with their male counterparts. She said women-led start-ups received just 21% of all venture capital in Australia and New Zealand in 2021[1] despite the fact that companies led by women generated higher revenues and 35% higher ROI than companies managed by men[2], she said.

“Many women are expected to carry the larger share of domestic and emotional labour of parenting while many also feel they need to sacrifice their careers or business ambitions in order to be there for their families,” Mrs Burton said. “However, the track record of success we’ve achieved for our Lotus Consulting clients shows that doesn’t have to be the case.”.

Many of Mrs Burton’s clients are in the healthcare sector, an industry where 77% of workers are female.

“I've spoken to hundreds of female private practice owners over the past two years, most of whom have told me a similar story. They have a big vision for their business, but they feel it’s unattainable due to the family sacrifice it would take,” she says.

Mrs Burton’s idea for Lotus Consulting emerged after her own struggle managing a business with a newborn and a toddler. She developed an approach that allowed her to focus on her business without sacrificing family. She has developed this into a successful global online coaching business that helps other women do the same. The business now runs two popular online programs for women: Success Without Sacrifice™ for established private practice owners and Abundant Referrals™ for practice owners just starting out.

Lotus Consulting and its programs have enabled more than 150 women business owners to establish and grow successful healthcare practices. In the past 12 months, the company’s Australian clients have created 30 new job roles in their local community. And worldwide - despite the pandemic - her clients have generated an estimated $7million in revenue over the past 12 months.

Winners in the Telstra Business Awards Accelerating Women category will be announced later this month.
