Former ABC journalist and author Matt Peacock has passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer, the ABC confirmed earlier today. Peacock, known for his fearless journalism, served as a foreign correspondent in London, New York, and Washington, as well as the ABC’s chief political correspondent for programs like AM and The World Today. His acclaimed book Killer Company, which exposed asbestos-related cover-ups by James Hardie Industries, was later adapted into the ABC miniseries Devil’s Dust. Beginning his ABC career in 1973 as a cadet, Peacock dedicated decades to investigative reporting, advocating for marginalized communities. In 2013, he was elected by his peers as the staff representative on the ABC board. ABC Chair Kim Williams in a condolence note said, “Matt was a courageous and principled journalist, deeply trusted by audiences. He believed in the ABC’s integrity and urged his colleagues to uphold it without compromise. We will miss his friendship and wisdom.�

The ABC has announced new roles for prominent journalists Patricia Karvelas and Greg Jennett in 2025 according to a media release from the organisation. Patricia Karvelas will expand her ABC NEWS presence, leaving Radio National after 10 years. Alongside hosting Q+A and The Party Room podcast, she will now anchor Afternoon Briefing on ABC iview and ABC NEWS Channel each weekday. Karvelas will also launch Politics Now, a podcast delivering political analysis and daily updates during the federal election campaign. Greg Jennett, after three years on Afternoon Briefing, will assume a senior role in Canberra. He will present the ACT 7PM News from Sunday to Thursday, conduct Stateline interviews, and contribute to federal election coverage. Radio Today reported that Daniel Smith has announced his departure as SCA’s group content director for North Queensland after two and a half years.  Smith, who oversaw content for markets including Cairns, Atherton, Townsville, Mt Isa, and Mackay, leaves on a high note with record-breaking listener numbers in Townsville. In Survey 1 for 2024, Townsville’s Triple M and Hit stations posted significant growth, with weekly listeners up 25.9 per cent for Triple M and 12.6 per cent for Hit, securing the top two spots across all dayparts.  Reflecting on his team’s achievements in a LinkedIn post, Smith expressed pride in their decade-long winning streak and lasting impact on the market.

Caroline Hutchinson, a longtime favourite on the Sunshine Coast’s MIX FM, announced her departure from the station’s breakfast show at the end of this year, Radio Info reported.  Reflecting on her two decades at MIX FM alongside co-host Mark Darin, Hutchinson shared memories of moving to the area in 1998, when her children were young and homes cost under $150,000.
