FOURTH RIGHT: The death of the 'viral' excuse and why Indian TV news should welcome it

For years, Indian television news has operated on one quietly understood editorial principle: if it's trending, it must be covered. A shaky clip, a breathless anchor, a chyron in red caps and prime time practically writes itself. Verification, when it does happen, was something you did after the outrage had already peaked. Sometimes much later. Sometimes never.
This week, that model took a long-overdue reckoning. The News Broadcasting & Digital Standards Authority (NBDSA) has tightened its rules on how social media content moves from a stranger's phone to a national broadcast. The directive is plain-spoken: if you didn't verify it, you shouldn't air it. And if you do, slapping a "viral, unverified" disclaimer on screen won't protect you.
