Player 2 streams for the Terry Campese Foundation

Homegrown gaming site Player 2 has set the stage for its next Player 2 Charity Marathon, in support of the Terry Campese Foundation which helps vulnerable young Australians.
 
Beginning on September 15th at 10.00am, and running for 24-hours, the Player 2 team will tackle a different game every hour on its Twitch.tv stream, including the likes of Halo, Rock Band, Street Fighter, NBA Jam and more.
 
Last year’s effort raised a total more than $3,700 for the Terry Campese Foundation, and this year Player 2 is hoping to reach the $4,000 mark.
 
To help get gamers and supporters into the spirit, there is a massive cache of more than 200 prizes on offer, including new release titles like Spider-Man and Far Cry 5, game related merchandise and more.
 
“As is always the case when we run these events, the Australian PR and development community has been outstanding in their support,” said Player 2 editor Matt Hewson.
 
“Their donations of games and merch ensure that the Charity Marathon is going to be a success. Their support makes sure as many people know about the Marathon as possible and for that I can’t thank them enough and it warms my heart to see just how eager they all were to help out.”
 
The Terry Campese Foundation — named for former Canberra Raiders captain Terry Campese — engages youths by helping them to identify their own strengths and weaknesses, and combat any weaknesses and threats.
 
“The chance to help out a charity such as Terry’s is an honour and a privilege.”
 
“At Player 2, we often lament the lack of positive coverage our favourite hobby receives from mainstream media, so we feel it is our responsibility to lead by example.”
 
“We are a small site in the grand scheme of things, but as we have shown previously our size doesn’t stop us from helping out in a meaningful way. The Terry Campese Foundation is a charity that aims to help those who are struggling in life, be it from illness or poverty, and that is something I feel we can all get behind.”
 
Supporters who donate $2 or more to the campaign will go into the running for the prizes, which have been generously contributed by Xbox Australia, Ubisoft Australia, 5 Star Games, Bandai Namco Australia, MPS, Bethesda Australia, 2K Australia, Turn Left Distribution, Defiant Development, Lumi Consulting, Power Up and Devolver Digital.

Benedictus leaves Men’s Health for The Father Hood

Luke Benedictus has given his notice of resignation as editor of Men’s Health Australia.

Pacific Magazines CEO Gereurd Roberts said in an internal memo that Benedictus will finish up on November 19, 2018 due to family reasons, and start with online portal The Father Hood the next day as content director from his new office in Melbourne. He had been with the magazine for a decade.

Benedictus has agreed to contribute to Men’s Health from time to time, added Roberts.

Co-founded by Benedictus, Andrew McUtchen, and Jeremy Macvean, The Father Hood is geared towards fathers and fathers-to-be. Kids portal The Parent Brand and production company About Bob are partners in the new venture, as reported over B & T.

When asked about Benedictus’ new opportunity, McUtchen said his ability to relate with Australian men and his experiences as a father was a good fit to engage men who want to improve their fatherly skills.

Ten Daily welcomes three new editors

Ten Daily’s editors circle has been bolstered with three new faces.

At the top of the list, Network Ten announced today that Anthony Sharwood takes on the sports desk, backed up by many years’ experience at News.com.au, HuffPost Australia, and sports website PlayersVoice. “Just wandered into ten daily and nobody kicked me out so I think I'm the new sports editor. Excited!” read part of Sharwood’s Twitter profile description. Ten Daily managing editor Mel Cornford said Sharwood’s experience will be a vital asset in Ten Daily pushing forward with more sports content.

Hegedus takes on hit99.5 Sunraysia Breakfast co-hosting job

Hit99.5 Sunraysia has welcomed Amy Hegedus to co-host its breakfast show with Michael Billings.

Hegedus was offered the job after a trial run with Billings — in the wake of co-host Amber leaving for Triple M Bundaberg in June — resulted in some brewing chemistry. Hegedus also had a short solo gig as Billings went on early paternity leave a few weeks back.

Previously, Hegedus worked a one-year run for a Hot 100 Darwin Saturday-morning show, and also has extensive marketing experience at ARN, NewsCorp Australia, and Hearst Magazines, among others.  

“We are thrilled to have Amy join the team and offer a new DNA to the show which compliments the already stellar line up on Hit,” said Southern Cross Austereo regional VIC/SA content director Luke Toohey, as reported over Radio Today.

“I know Amy and Billows are going to build a great relationship with listeners in Mildura and surrounds.”

Cullen prepares ELLE departure

Justine Cullen is stepping down this month as ELLE Australia’s EIC, Bauer Media announced today.

Cullen said the time had come to concentrate more on her family following a long service with the company. She had been with Bauer Media as an editor for ten years, including the last five years in charge at ELLE.

Current ELLE deputy editor Genevra Leek will be acting EIC pending the selection of a new head.

“Justine’s contribution not only to ELLE, but also to the magazine industry, has been significant,” said Bauer Media Australia GM for publishing Fiorella di Santo.

Williams welcomed as Lifehacker deputy editor

Allure Media’s Hayley Williams has risen up to become deputy editor at the Lifehacker website.
 
Speaking to Influencing, Williams said that after three years working at Allure, she can’t wait to take the next step in her career.
 
“I’ve always loved being able to write across the huge range of topics Lifehacker covers, and the Deputy Editor role is a greater chance to flex my writing muscles and bring my own individual style to one of Australia’s most unique online publications,” said Williams.
 
Williams first joined Allure Media as an editorial assistant back in 2015, and replaces former deputy editor Jackson Ryan who defected to CNET back in June, following in Mark Serrels’ footsteps.
 
Her promotion comes just one day after Rae Johnston finished her run at Lifehacker’s sister-site Gizmodo. Johnston celebrated the end of her time at Allure Media yesterday by posting some of her favourite stories on Twitter.

Grin Creative releases new quarterly Avalon Airport magazine

Grin Creative is publishing a new free quarterly magazine for Melbourne’s Avalon Airport.

Scheduled for release later this month, Avalon Inbound I Outbound offers content on various travel destinations in Australia and Asia. Some of the Australia content is aimed at generating interest in the Great Ocean Road and around Geelong.

The introduction of the new magazine is being timed to build up interest for the airport’s opening of a new international terminal in December 2018; budget carrier Air Asia will be the first to send flights to Avalon.

Grin Creative director Justin Jamieson said the company’s experience in publishing the National Geographic Traveller and get lost, among other magazines, will work towards the success of Avalon Inbound I Outbound.

Baker started this week after wrapping up affairs late last month at The Canberra Times, where she covered the education beat for the past two years.
