Today’s Ten: Rampant misuse of PMLA slammed by SC while granting bail to TN minister Senthil Balaji

By Pradeep Damodaran in Media News on
Observing that rigorous bail provisions in statutes like PMLA, anti-terror law UAPA and NDPS Act on narcotics cannot become a “tool” to keep an undertrial accused in jail for an unreasonably long time, the Supreme Court on Thursday held that the requirement of expeditious disposal of cases must be read into these statutes. “Inordinate delay” in the conclusion of the trial and higher threshold for grant of bail cannot go together, the court noted. Amit Anand Choudhary for The Times of India reported on the bench comprising Justices A S Oka and A G Masih granting bail to former Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji, who has been in custody for 15 months in a money laundering case linked to a cash-for-job scam, saying there was no likelihood the trial being concluded shortly as the case involves 2,000 accused and 500 witnesses. The scam dates to Balaji’s 2011-2016 tenure as transport minister in AIADMK govt. The bench observed that stringed conditions enumerated in bail provi

By Pradeep Damodaran in Media News on

Peerzada Ashiq of The Hindu noted that "enthusiastic voters formed long queues early in the morning at most polling booths across the 26 constituencies." While the highest voting percentage of 74.7 per cent was recorded in Reasi district, the capital Srinagar recorded just 29.81 per cent polling, showing a marginal increase from the 27 per cent in the 2014 assembly elections.  Recording the reluctance of the voters in Srinagar, Peerzada also spoke to several residents who remained unenthusiastic about the polls and what change they could bring to them.
