While the business undergoes an operational restructure that brings my time to an end, I couldn’t be more proud of what our small but mighty team achieved. “The brand was pumping. ‘mediaweek.com.au’ page views were up, and our socials were off the charts, with May ’26, smashing records. Kerala journalists force IAS officer out of Assembly press meet

By Meena R. Prashant in Media News on
Journalists in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday forced Agriculture Director Sriram Venkitaraman IAS, reportedly an accused in the 2019 death of journalist K M Basheer, to leave a press conference convened by newly appointed Agriculture Minister T Siddique at the Kerala Legislative Assembly. The protest erupted after journalists saw Venkitaraman seated alongside the minister in the Assembly media room. Journalists raised slogans and objected to his presence, arguing that an accused in Basheer's death should not be given prominence at an official government event. It is learnt that Minister Siddique initially rejected the journalists' demand twice, saying the matter could be discussed later. Journalists, however, remained firm, insisting that an accused in Basheer's death should not be seated alongside the minister during an official press conference. Following the protest, Suresh Edapal, senior journalist and general secretary of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), t

Devarshi Narad Jayanti Awardee Nava Thakuria calls for restoring credibility in journalism

By Meena R. Prashant in Media News on
Senior journalist and Ishan Darpan editor Nava Thakuria, who will be honoured with the Devarshi Narad Jayanti Award 2026, has said that restoring credibility must be the top priority for Indian journalism at a time when traditional media faces growing challenges from social media and alternative platforms. Speaking ahead of the award ceremony organised by Vishwa Samvad Kendra (VSK) Assam, Thakuria reflected on the profession’s limited financial rewards and social privileges: “Every award given to a journalist is a real inspiration because the profession gives very little money, less security and limited privileges in society.” Coming from what he described as the “print media school of journalism”, Thakuria noted that digital media has increasingly occupied the space once dominated by traditional news organisations. He stressed that awards for print journalists carry both honour and responsibility. On the state of the profession, he said: “We have lost credibility and

Newcastle NBN bulletins savaged as WIN takes control

By Staff Writers in Media News on
WIN Corporation will implement deep cuts to NBN News local broadcasts after taking over the station from Nine, with Newcastle-produced bulletins cut from an hour to 30 minutes and weekend bulletins axed entirely. From Saturday, 27th June local editions of NBN News will be replaced by New News at 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday nights. On weekdays, local bulletins will move to an earlier timeslot of 5:30pm and run for half-an-hour before Nine News follows at 6pm. WIN promoted the changes as delivering viewers “an extended 90 minutes of local, national and international news coverage each weeknight”.  TV Blackbox confirmed with WIN that studio production would remain at NBN’s existing Newcastle studios, but there are fears that the changes will result in significant job cuts. WIN is not commenting of redundancies.
