Journalists across Himachal Pradesh have voiced strong displeasure over the alleged neglect of their demands in the state budget. Members of the Himachal Pradesh Union of Journalists said that while the budget included announcements for farmers, gardeners, employees, and pensioners, it failed to address long‑pending concerns of the media fraternity. State President Joginder Dev Arya, along with senior union leaders, criticised what they termed the government’s “indifferent attitude” towards journalists. They stressed that the press, as the fourth pillar of democracy, plays a crucial role in bridging the government and the public, making its exclusion from policy considerations concerning. The union warned that continued neglect could have wider implications for democratic functioning and urged the state government to take an early decision on issues concerning the media community to ease growing dissatisfaction, Dainik Tribute reported.

Agartala is grieving the untimely loss of journalist Nandan Chakraborty, who died in a tragic road accident in Belonia subdivision on March 18, 2026. He was 45. Tripura Info noted, Chakraborty, a resident of Ram Nagar, was on his way to Sabroom when his vehicle met with an accident near Rajapur. Despite being rushed to Santir Bazar hospital, he was declared dead on arrival. His passing has cast a deep shadow over Tripura’s media fraternity. The demand for the release of Kashmiri journalist Irfan Mehraj has intensified, with over 30 civil society and rights organisations globally urging the Indian government to free him as he completes three years in detention on Friday. In a joint statement, the groups called on the Centre to end what they described as the continued repression of human rights defenders and journalists in Jammu and Kashmir. Mehraj was detained by the National Investigation Agency on March 20, 2023, on terror-related charges, which the 33 organisations have termed politically motivated and fabricated. He is the founding editor of Wande Magazine and has worked with TwoCircles.net, besides contributing to international media outlets such as Deutsche Welle and Al Jazeera.
