Delhi HC clarifies it does not intend to act against journalist Manisha Pande

By Staff Writer in Media News on
The Delhi High Court has clarified that it does not intend to take any action against journalist Manisha Pande or sabotage her career, following strong oral observations made during a hearing earlier this week, The Indian Express reported. A Division Bench of Justices C. Hari Shankar and Om Prakash Shukla was hearing appeals filed by TV Today (India Today Group) and Newslaundry in a copyright infringement and defamation dispute on January 22. During the proceedings, the Bench objected to the use of an unparliamentary word in a programme featuring Pande and remarked that she had not followed basic standards of decency in reporting. The court had also suggested it could consider making her a party to the case, raising concerns that her career could be placed in “disarray.” After these remarks circulated widely on social media and triggered strong reactions, Justice Hari Shankar on January 23 recalled lawyers from both sides — even though the matter was not listed — to issue a

The Delhi High Court wanted Newslaundry journalist Manisha Pande “thrown out.” The warning was so explicit: the court mentioned it could make observations that might derail her career. Social media posters froze sharp oral remarks into permanent judgments. Commentary followed commentary, most of it outraged, some triumphant, very little careful. Then the court spoke again. In an unusually candid pushback, the High Court clarified that it had no intention of acting against Manisha Pande. It expressed displeasure at how its oral observations were lifted, isolated, and turned
