AI takes over the monotony, frees up newsrooms for creativity, says Kalli Purie

By Staff Writer in Media News on
For journalists who live by tight deadlines and constant newsroom buzz, exhaustion often becomes part of the job. But what if technology could take over the repetitive work and free up time for storytelling? That’s where artificial intelligence (AI) steps in, say media experts, including India Today Group’s Vice Chairperson Kalli Purie. Speaking at the 25th edition of FICCI Frames 2025, held on October 7 and 8 at The Fairmont, Mumbai, Purie shared her confident vision of how newsrooms can co-exist with AI, not as rivals but as partners in creativity. The Silver Jubilee edition of Asia’s premier media and entertainment conclave brought together industry leaders to discuss the future of film, television, OTT, and artificial intelligence. Purie believes AI’s biggest strength lies in removing the monotony of newsroom routines, the kind of work that consumes time but not creativity. “One part is that it takes out the monotony; nobody likes to do transcription. You know how bo

From newsroom to silver screen: Actors who were journalists first

By Staff Writer in Media News on
While countless actors have convincingly portrayed journalists on screen, a select few actually walked the newsroom corridors before stepping into the limelight. Their journey from reporting facts to performing iconic roles on screen adds a fascinating layer to their artistic persona. R. Sarathkumar, the versatile actor of Tamil cinema, began his professional life far from the film studios. In 1974, he earned the title of Mr. Madras University as a bodybuilder, but soon gravitated towards journalism. Moving to Bangalore, he joined the Tamil newspaper Dinakaran, initially as a distributor and later as a reporter. Yet destiny had other plans, and Sarathkumar made his acting debut in the Telugu film Samajamlo Sthree in 1986, marking the start of a successful cinematic journey. Bollywood’s iconic Zeenat Aman, known for her bold and glamorous roles in the 1970s, also had a brief stint in journalism. Before lighting up the silver screen, she worked with Feminamagazine, where she honed

Image source: BT, NDTV, Economic Times Legal and Spicy IP; Edited by Dinesh Raj M   The India-UK Free Trade Agreement, signed this July and now entering its implementation phase, marks a rare moment when two mature democracies decide to bet big on shared prosperity instead of protectionism. For both, the pact is more than tariff charts and policy clauses—it’s a statement of strategic trust. Hot off the Press The Hindu Bureau reported that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the deal “the biggest since the UK left the European Union—and arguably the biggest India has ever struck.” Speaking in Mumbai on his first official visit to India, Starmer described the pact as “a launchpad for growth,” pointing out that India is set to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2028. TOI noted that the U.K. will offer duty-free access on 99.1 per cent of its tariff lines, instantly covering the full trade value upon enforcement. Both leaders will meet in Mumbai to r

NBF and Chennai Press Club condemn blackout of Puthiya Thalaimurai news channel

By Meena R. Prashant in Media News on
The News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) and the Chennai Press Club condemned the abrupt blackout of Puthiya Thalaimurai News Channel on the Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Network (TACTV), saying the state cable operator has taken the channel off air across Tamil Nadu. Puthiya Thalaimurai has also claimed that its reach has allegedly dropped sharply on TACTV while distribution on private operators and DTH continues. A government response was not available at press time. Haseef Mohamed, Editor-in-Chief at Aransei and Secretary of the Chennai Press Club, said, “TACTV earlier had 50 per cent of the total channels connected, but over time, there has been a significant dip to about 20–30 per cent, which is quite considerable. Apart from this, there are private players and DTH operators. When it comes to the government cable network, such tactics are not new. This has been happening for the past 15 years.” He added context on the evolution of state and private cable in Tamil Nadu. “The
